A tragic story surrounds the Sub Marine Explorer, one of the first submersibles capable of diving below 100 feet for extended periods. Unaware of the effects of decompression on the human body, several crew members, including the inventor Julius H. Kroehl, died from “the bends.” The vessel was eventually abandoned and later discovered in Panama.

The German Submarine U-352, a Type VIIC U-boat, began its military service in 1942. After mistakenly attacking a U.S. Coast Guard cutter, the submarine was sunk and now rests at the bottom of the ocean. It has since become a popular scuba diving site, with some of the artifacts recovered from the wreck on display at the North Carolina Aquarium.
